Morocco refuses any imposed solution on Sahara issue

Originally published

Morocco reiterated on Tuesday its categorical refusal of any solution that would be imposed on it in the Sahara issue.

"Morocco's stand is crystal clear. We refuse that any decision related to the kingdom's sovereignty be imposed on us," said Moroccan foreign affairs and cooperation minister, Mohamed Benaissa, at the end of talks with the Arab League's chief, Amr Moussa, who is on a two-day visit to Morocco.

The minister further stressed that the concerned parties should reach a political solution that guarantees Morocco's basic right of sovereignty over its national territory, and secures to the inhabitants of southern provinces rights that are provided for by the United Nations.

"Morocco has made its position clear to all the UN Security Council members and is awaiting the results of consultations conducted in this issue, Benaissa went on.

Morocco had rejected the latest plan proposed by the personal envoy of the UN secretary general for the Sahara James Baker. It has announced nonetheless that it is still ready to open dialogue to reach a fair and realistic solution.
