Chairman of the Middle East group and Gulf in the European Parliament, Sami Nair, has stressed that his talks with Syrian officials dealt with main points pertaining to the Syrian European partnership agreement and effects of signing the agreement on the Syrian economy and industry.

In a statement in Damascus on Thursday to the daily Tishreen, Nair stressed that the talks touched upon modernization of the administrative, economic, law and all other domains in Syria.

Nair said that progress was attained regarding issue of the customs tariffs and stressed that problems which hinder signing the partnership agreement are mere technical problems.

He clarified that Syria comprehends the necessity of signing the agreement and that Syria has a strategic interest in signing it so the European Union will do its best to attain progress regarding this issue.

Later on, in Beirut, Lebanese Foreign Minister, Jan Obied reviewed with Nair developments of the Middle East peace process and the dangerous Israeli military escalation against the Palestinian people.

Obied underlined the necessity of commitment to the international resolutions for realizing just and comprehensive peace in the region and stressed that there will be no peace in the region without Syria and Lebanon.

For his part, Nair asserted Europe's commitment to just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East.
