Morocco's socialist party urges EU to endeavor for release of moroccans detained by polisario
The Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP), led by former prime minister Abderrahmane Youssoufi, urged the European Parliament to endeavor by all means to obtain "the release without delay" of all Moroccans held by the Polisario secessionist movement in Tindouf (southwestern Algeria).
In a letter to the European Parliament published this Saturday by the USFP daily in French "Liberation," the party hailed the European emergency humanitarian initiative called "passport for freedom" and expressed total support to the European councilor, Dominique Rambaud, who is sponsoring the initiative, for the settlement of the urgent humanitarian case of Moroccan prisoners of war.
The letter, signed by Mohamed El Yazghi- assistant-first secretary of the party, deplores the worrying detention conditions of these prisoners and the psychological effect of this long imprisonment that lasted for 916 of them for over 20 years.
The International Committee of the Red Cross that has been bringing them health care and trying to maintain their ties with their relatives has repeatedly expressed the same concerns, says the letter.
Consequently and in accordance with resolution 1359 of the Security Council and with the international law, we call the European parliament to endeavor by all means to end this worrying humanitarian problem and obtain the release without delay of all the prisoners, the letter calls.
