Bashir bans embargo from parties's activities

Originally published

Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir has lifted the embargo imposed on the activities of the Sudanese parties used to be represented in the parliament before 1984, including the communist party and the Baath Arab socialist party.

On the other hand, al-Bashir on Saturday officially permitted the political parties to work. These parties used to be represented in the parliament before he assumed power in a military coupe in 1989, according to a decree circulated to the press.

Al-Bashir signed a presidential decree that cancels an article in the law concerning parties and political organizations which used to permit "until then" certain "registered" parties only with the majority of them a margin or minority group.

This decree, however, opens the door before large parties like the Umma party led by former prime minister al-Sadeq al-Mahdi and the democratic federation party led by Othman al-Meirghani and other parties like the communist party or the Bath Party.

By now parties used to be registered and other parties concerned are able to resume activities especially nomination for the election, according to this decree.
