Originally published

The ruling National Congress party in Sudan on Saturday announced the principle of introducing an amendment to the constitution. This measure intends to cancel an article which limits the number of terms of office for presidency in the country to two times for the same president.

Member of the Shoura council, the ruling party's higher commission Ismael al-Haj Mousa said that the National Congress agreed to these amendments following a series of meetings it held on Thursday and Friday and it will shortly submit them to the parliament for adoption.

These amendments, in particular, state to abrogate one article from the constitution adopted in 1998, saying that it is the right of every citizen to assume the presidency for, at most, two terms of office, each is for five year. The Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir was elected for a five year term of office in December 2000.
