USD 90 billion, cost of Arab states electricity needs until 2010

Originally published

The sector of electricity in the Arab states is expected to attract new investments, estimated by the Arab Monetary Fund at USD 40 billion in 2005, while other estimates made by consultation and other international sides speak about the need of more than USD 90 billion until the end of the current decade.

All these estimates are based on the rapid growth in the demand to electricity in the Arab states at 5.9% annually. This figure represents twice the world demand and this is because of the economic expansion which makes it imperative to ensure extra resources of energy, besides the population growth in the Arab states which is considered the highest in the world as population growth in the Arab world is 3.8% while it is 1.1 % worldwide.Estimates indicate that the demands for electricity will be also increasing to more 185,000 megawatt within the four coming years and that more than 110,000 megawatt by the fall of 2010, against 74,000 megawatt in 1999 and 49,000 megawatt in 1980.
