Sahara: The United States backs Baker's efforts

Originally published

The United States backs efforts by the UN secretary General's personal envoy for the Sahara, James Baker, the US ambassador in Rabat, Ms Margaret Tutwiler said in an interview published on Sunday by "Al Alam" daily.

Touching on Baker-designed framework agreement advocating a political solution to the Sahara issue, the US diplomat said the settlement does depend on the good will of the various sides no matter how competent the person in charge of bringing standpoints closer is.

Morocco had repeatedly said it remains available to carry on negotiations on the Sahara issue, so as to bring these negotiations to an end.

The US ambassador also dealt with economic relations between Rabat and Washington and said that about 80 US enterprises are wishing to invest in Morocco. These investors, she said, are attracted by Morocco's legal instruments, which are flexible and transparent.
