Somalia and the UN

Originally published

The UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has announced that Somalia is still an insecure place for the establishment of a UN office despite the fact that 9 months has elapsed on the UN Security Council ratification of approving peace plans in this country which is divided by the civil war.

News reports quoted Annan as saying in a report he sent to the UN Security Council on Monday evening that despite the fact that a provisional national government was formed in August 2000, which was the first government established in Makadishu within 10 years, however, there is no authority that can guarantee the safety and smooth work for the UN activities in that country.

Annan explained that the lack of security in Somalia prevents the relief workers of the UN from reaching aids to those who are in need whose number totaled 750,000 because of the drought and the shortage in agricultural crops.

Annan added that these conditions made of Somalia one of the poorest countries in the world where the income per capita is half USD and the life expectancy rate is 45 years.
