Egypt criticizes UNSC failure to handle conditions in occupied territories

Originally published

Egypt strongly criticized the U.N. Security Council for failing to handle conditions in the occupied Palestinian territories more than once over the past few months.

This came during the first meeting of the U.N. General Assembly within the framework of meetings aimed at reviewing a report on the activities of the U.N. Security Council throughout a whole year. The report will be referred to the General Assembly in implementation of the U.N. charter.

Egypt's permanent delegate to the U.N. Ambassador Ahmed Abul-Gheit, who delivered a statement during the meeting, said the Security Council has failed for various reasons to tackle the deteriorating situation in the Palestinian territories despite clarifications by Arab ambassadors on the need to deploy international observers to monitor the situation between the Palestinian and Israeli sides.

Some member states wanted to twist facts by linking the deployment of such troops to the approval of the Israeli authority, which is absolutely illogical, he emphasized.

He criticized the performance of the U.N. Security Council which lacks transparency and would lead to overlooking the views of the member states, he added.
