Berlusconi wants to meet with ambassadors of Muslim states

Originally published

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi invited the ambassadors of the Islamic countries in Rome to meet with him Tuesday in what seems to be an attempt to pacify angry reactions to his statements made Tuesday in Berlin in which he attacked Islam.

The premier's invitation is the first precedent of its kind as far as the Italian protocol is concerned.

The premier is expected to review the misunderstanding or misinterpretation triggered by his statements.

"Berlusconi expressed regret over statements he had made last week regarding Islam," the BBC Radio reported Friday.

The Radio quoted him as telling the Italian Parliament his statements were distorted and that he felt sorry that his words, which were misinterpreted, have hurt the feelings of "his Arab and Muslim friends."
