Originally published

Morocco will play host to the 13th international conference on micro-electronics slated for the end of next October.

The conference, to be attended by some 20 countries, is part of efforts made to reduce the digital divide between industrialized and developing countries.

Debates will evolve around three main topics, namely micro-electronics technologies, conception and implementation of integrated circuits and systems and computer-assisted program development.

Some twenty enterprises are operating in the electronic sector in Morocco, providing 5,192 jobs. The sector's turnover is assessed at 988 million DH (about $85.91 million). In 1999, investments injected in this sector in Morocco amounted to 112 million DH (some $9.7 million).

About 69 percent of enterprises operating in the sector are located in the Casablanca region and 15 percent in the northern region of Tangiers-Tetuan.
