African presidents and international financial institutions to meet november over African development plan

Originally published

Senegalese President, Abdoulaye Wade, announced that African heads of state and international financial institutions will be meeting next November in Dakar to raise funds for the new African development initiative.

Wade, who had devised his own OMEGA plan that was merged with south African president's MAP plan to form the African development initiative, stressed the importance of financial contributions from the private sector, adding some US$ 4 billion have already been pledged by various partners, including international institutions and private companies.

The Senegalese president, who was interviewed by the Panafrican news agency "PANA," argued that the raised funds should be managed by a continental manager, assisted by highly-skilled African experts. Meanwhile, the political management will be supervised by an authority comprising 15 African heads of state, he went on.

After he announced that the first project could be launched in March 2002, he expressed optimism over the plan enforcement, saying it represents a new African vision and should obtain important financial support.
