Mubarak review latest developments in the Occupied Territories
US Middle East peace envoy William Burns met with President Hosni Mubarak on Sunday upon his arrival to cairo.
The meeting was attended by Reno Harnish, acting US Ambassador in Cairo, and Jack Wallace, acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of State on the American side and Osama Al-Baz, Presidential Political Advisor, on the Egyptian side.
After the meeting, Burns, who doubles as Assistant Secretary of State, said his "excellent meeting" with Mubarak was part of continuous consultation and coordination with Egypt, which plays an important role in the region.
"I underlined the strong commitment of the US to fully implement the Mitchell recommendations in every respect," he said.
On his talks with President Mubarak, he said they reviewed the progress secured by George Tenet, stressing the importance of going on that track until stability prevails and life returns to normal in order to create a glimpse of hope for the Palestinians who live under extremely difficult conditions.
The US is obliged to help both parties, the Palestinians and Israelis, to implement the Mitchell recommendations as soon an possible to maintain the ceasefire, re-build confidence and resume political talks as soon as possible.
US Secretary of State Colin Powell, he said, will push such target forward during his tour of the region next week.
"We find that the important issues are adding stability to the situation and cool-off pressure under which the Palestinians live and this is not an easy mission but it is an important issue for both sides besides the US, Egypt and other parties in the international community," he said.
