Egypt welcomes deploying more observers in Congo
Egypt welcomed the recommendation forwarded by United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Kofi Annan on doubling the peacekeeping operation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The bid is a positive indication of the UN keenness on bringing about peace in DRC and restoring security and stability in the Great Lakes Region as a whole, said Ahmad Abul-Gheit, Egypt's permanent delegate to the UN.
The peace process on Congo witnessed commitment by the parties concerned to the ceasefire and disengagement agreement, said Abul-Gheit.
He noted that Egypt will continue its active role to establish peace in Congo, whether through bilateral contacts with the parties concerned or within the context of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) and the UN.
Egypt is still ranked first as regards the number of military observers in the peacekeeping operation in Congo, 25, said Abul-Gheit.
