German home minister, Otto Schily, who paid this June 6-7 a two-day visit to Morocco, said on Friday "Morocco is a factor of stability in the Mediterranean and an important partner for Germany."

The German official, who was received by king Mohammed VI, explained in a statement that the Mediterranean region is very important to Germany, adding that the European Union's enlargement to east European countries will not overshadow the union interest in north African countries bordering the Mediterranean.

Morocco, he went on, plays a key role in the struggle against illegal immigration and drug trafficking.

He also said he agreed with Moroccan peer, Ahmed El Midaoui, to hold consultations on a regular basis at the level of ministers and experts.

The two sides will be meeting in Berlin to "examine enforcement of the 1998 agreement between the two countries and the integration of the more than 70,000 Moroccans living in Germany. Meanwhile, El Midaoui vowed that the stay conditions of Germans living in Morocco will be improved.
