Maghreban union, best warrant to stability in the region

Originally published

Mauritania and Tunisia have asserted that the Arab Maghreb Union (UMA) is the best warrant to stability and development in the region.

The assertion was made by Mauritanian and Tunisian Prime Ministers, Cheikh El Afia Ould Mohamed Khouna and Mohamed Ghanouchi, at the opening in Nouakchott Tuesday of the Mauritanian-Tunisian high joint commission.

UMA is a strategic choice and an outstanding gain for the people of the region and its building up is an unavoidable orientation both for the present and for the future, they outlined.

UMA was set up in Marrakesh in 1989 by Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia. Its activities have however been paralyzed due to strained relations between some member countries and especially between Morocco and Algeria over Algiers' direct involvement in the Sahara issue.

The two Maghreban prime ministers also stressed the need to bolster their cooperation at the bilateral level and to involve the private sector in the endeavor.
