The UN Disarmament Commission wound up three weeks of intensive deliberations on means necessary to achieve nuclear disarmament as well as measures of building confidence in the field of conventional weapons.

Egypt's UN chief delegate and head of its delegation to meetings said late Friday that the Egyptian delegation asserted Egypt's firm belief that the Middle East region should be a nuclear free zone.

Ambassador Ahmed Abul Gheit pointed out that President Hosni Mubarak has repeatedly called for freeing the Middle East region from all mass destruction weapons and means to deliver them.

The Ambassador said that participants reaffirmed that the five major nuclear powers should fulfil their obligations in accordance with article six of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in order to pave the way for a total elimination of nuclear weapons.
