Morocco and Ghana signed Thursday a memorandum of understanding and solidarity.

The memo will be a general frame to other accords to be concluded by the two countries and augurs a new phase for reactivating cooperation between the two countries, said Moroccan minister of foreign affairs and cooperation, Mohamed Benaissa, at the end of a meeting with his visiting Ghanaian peer, Hackman Owusu Agyemang.

The meeting discussed ways of enhancing cooperation in the sectors of fisheries, agriculture and tourism and both sides voiced resolve to give a new momentum to their relations of friendship, partnership and cooperation.

The meeting also covered the political actions the two countries can jointly conduct at the level of the United nations and regional organizations as well as issues of mutual concern, particularly African issues.

Benaissa said Morocco, Ghana and other friendly countries such as Senegal can play a key role in setting up a free-trade area in the region and in keeping pace with globalization.

Benaissa added he informed Ghanaian officials of King Mohammed VI's will to consolidate maritime transport and exchanges along Africa's Atlantic coast. The sovereign has issued instructions to service a Casablanca-Nouakchott-Dakar maritime line, he said, expressing hope that the line will go as far as Accra.

The Ghanaian official, who is visiting Morocco on the eve of the official visit President of Ghana will pay to Morocco, also voiced appreciation for bilateral relations that he described as "excellent" and said Ghana grants a special interest to Morocco as an emerging country having made great achievements in various sectors.

The Ghanaian foreign minister arrived in Morocco on Thursday and will leave on Monday.
