Originally published

For more than 4500 years, Egyptian have been celebrating one of the oldest local festivals, namely; Sham El-Naseem. It is believed that the Egyptians were the first people to practice the habit of eating colored eggs, lettuce, mallana and other green and leafy plants on Sham El-Nassem Day which comes immediately after the Easter.

Now Alexandria comes back to celebrate the spring feast, after ten-year absence. Montazah will open its palace gardens to the public who will flock to celebrate the occasion. About 20 thousand plants including some hundred rare ones, are exhibited there spreading magnificent perfumed scents.

The festival involves, as well, folkloric shows of dancing troupes plus military music parades.
