Complete Byzantine camp unearthed
An expedition of the Supreme Council of Antiquities discovered, at Alexandria-Matrouh highway, a camp dating back to the Byzantine age. Annexed to the camp is a construction constituting foundations of a circular fort.
The mission also found out a worshipping site with a small church planned in the Coptic style, surrounded by a number of rooms set for the priests. Around the fort there exists a host of graveyards.
The head of the mission said they unearthed some pottery with drawings showing religious suppression of early Christians practiced in the Roman age.
The discovery is important as well due to the fact that it is located on the sea coast. It represented one of the strongholds that secured the trade road and the caravans which passed there from the east to the west and vice versa.
