Jordanian FM: Amman Summit steps forward on joint Arab Action
Jordanian Foreign Minister Abdel Ellah Al-khatib Wednesday said Amman summit marked a step forward in the history of joint Arab action.
At a press conference with Arab League Secretary General Esmat Abdel Meguid following the closing session of the summit, khatib expressed conviction that a new Arab order would be formed in order to deal with the national challenges.
The challenges besetting the Arab nation require the rallying of all Arab states' efforts, he added.
Since the start of preparatory meetings of the summit, Jordan proposed enhancing Arab states' abilities in dealing with the nation's fateful and pending issues.
The Palestinian cause was on top of Arab leaders' discussions, he said, adding that the final communique of the summit expressed full support for the Palestinians in the face of Israeli aggressions.
"The leaders agreed to offer urgent assistance to the Palestinian Authority in order to enable it to face up to the six-month Israeli siege," khatib said.
The leaders pledged to back Lebanon and Syria until the Golan Heights and Shebaa Farms were liberated from Israeli occupation, he added.
The Jordanian Foreign Minister stressed Arab leader's regret over Washington's use of veto in the Tuesday session of the UN Security Council against a draft resolution on sending international observers to the Palestinian territories.
The leaders stressed that the US stance completely contradicts with the role as peace sponsor, expressing hope that the US would shoulder its responsibilities in preserving international peace and security, khatib added.
"Over the past two days, Arab foreign ministers held intensive consultations in a bid to reach a satisfactory formula as regards the state of affairs between Kuwait and Iraq," he said.
It is the first time to hold such consultations since the 1990 Gulf war and this was important, he added.
"But, unfortunately, they could not finalize a formula and, accordingly, the summit assigned king Abdullah II to hold talks with Arab leaders and Arab League Secretary General Abdel Maguid to pursue contacts in order to come out with an acceptable formula to both the Iraqi and Kuwaiti sides," Khatib said.
The Jordanian Minister expressed hope that the Arab committee which the Jordanian king will form soon would follow up the implementation of the summit resolutions.
Abdel Meguid, on his part, stressed anew that the summit assigned king abdullah to pursue contacts as regards the state of affairs between Iraq and Kuwait.
Abdel Meguid talked about the summit's call for lifting the UN ten-year sanctions against Iraq and settling for good the issue of Kuwaiti Prisoners of war (POWs).
He termed as successful Amman summit Commenting on leader of Libyan Revolution Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's statement, Abdel Meguid said the statement will be discussed through a committee, grouping a number of Arab Foreign Ministers who will meet soon at the request of Gaddafi himself.
About the Arab boycott of Israel, Abdel Meguid said this issue has been dealt with in the summit's Final Communique.
