Arab, Islamic states aborted Israeli bids to join SC
In the light of world-wide changes and transformations, the developing countries were obliged to look for advanced means to face the new changes, resulting in the influence of the big powers on the trends of the United Nations (UN), and the UN Security Council (SC).
Over the past few years, the Egyptian diplomacy put all its international weight to coordinate with the friendly states and regional organizations to defend the Arab, African, and Islamic interests, and counteracting any threats against the regional situation in the Middle East.
In an interview with the brilliant diplomat ambassador Ahmed Abul Gheit, Egypt's permanent delegate to the United Nations, a number of vital issues were discussed, foremost of which, the new chart of the Arab-Israeli conflict consequent to Sharon's premiership, and the sanctions addressed to the Arab and Islamic peoples. Excerpts :
* For 50 years, Israel was banned from affective participation in the membership of committees, and it was only a member of the Asian Group.
* The Asian states were rejecting Israel due to its noncompliance to the UN resolutions on the Palestinian issue, and its stance against comprehensive settlement to the Arab-Israeli dispute.
* Over the past decade the Palestinian issue and the settlement policies were discussed outside the framework of the UN, although the elements of settlement were based on the UN and SC resolutions.
These resolutions stipulate the principles of land-for-peace, and the right of all parties to live in peace and security.
* The Intifada of Al-Aqsa has heated the situation in the UN, and the Arab states resorted several times to the SC and the General Assembly.
* In my opinion, the coming period shall witness an escalation in the Arab diplomatic action in the UN on all domains.
* In this case we'll cast our vision on the dual-standard policy and the allegations on Human Rights.
* The Arab and Islamic states are trying to get a permanent seat in the SC, but they are presently acting through the wider group of Non-Alignment.
* The issue of sanctions imposed on the Arab and Islamic, has its negative impact on the UN members. Many states call upon reconsideration of the form and content of the sanctions.
