No nominations for the post of the AL Secretary General

Originally published

The Arab league on Sunday denied to have received any nominations from Yemen or any other Arab state for the post of the secretary general of the Arab League. This denial was made after the Yemeni deputy premier and the foreign minister Abdul Qader Bajmal announced the nomination of the former prime minister Muhammad al-Aini to the post of the AL secretary general.

Bajmal's statements resulted in different reactions inside the Arab circles working at the AL. The stances ranged between supporting the door for nomination before Arab figures and another position clings to the tradition which says that the secretary general of the of the AL should be from the country of the AL headquarters.

However, well-informed sources said that the question of the secretary general for the AL will be decided upon during the coming Arab summit conference due to be held in Amman by the end of March.

The sources added that the " mechanism of regular meeting of the Arab summit stated that the election of the AL secretary general by the AL council to be at the level of the Summit." The sources expected that " the term of office for the current secretary general Ismat Abdul Miguid to be renewed for a new term of office of five years or to extend his post just for two years."
