UN to lift weapons ban from Ethiopia, Eritrea
The UN Security council is intending to lift weapon banning on both Eritrea and Ethiopia on Wednesday, at a request by the US, despite doubts that ending the embargo will be a premature step after the cessation of battles between the two countries.
News reports said that several countries might abstinate from voting a controversial draft decision but it is expected, anyhow, the UN Security council 15-member states will approve this decision.
The US argues that the official peace agreement signed in December 12 2000 in which Washington took part in the efforts to end the border war which lasted for two years between Ethiopia and Eritrea, stated to lift weapons embargo while other members at the UN security council says that this step implies danger due to the continued conflicts between the two countries over implementing the forces disengagement process between the two sides.
However, arms banning was imposed on Ethiopia and Eritrea on May 17, 2000 as a punishment over the resumption of fighting in the borders war between the two countries.
