Originally published

The first African conference on the management of dangerous wastes opened on Monday in Rabat with the participation of experts from Africa and several developed countries.

The conference close on Friday seeks to set up an appropriate international framework for an environment-friendly and rational management of dangerous wastes. Debates will also cover the elimination of dangerous wastes and how to avoid accumulation of stocks of dangerous wastes.

The conference will also look into means to consolidate African countries' capacity to eliminate dangerous wastes stocks, integrate the management of such wastes in governmental policies and work out plans of action for a rational and ecological management of products, such as pesticides, when their date of use is past.

The environment-friendly and rational management of dangerous wastes will be debated at the level of a three-day workshop, while the plans of actions will be discussed at a two-day international forum that will be attended by some African ministers of environment. The conference also features an exhibition on activities and technologies related to the management of dangerous wastes.

The conference is co-financed by the Swiss Development Cooperation (SDC) and the German technical cooperation body (GTZ).
