A draft law to prevent double nationality for Jordanian officials
In a step which is considered the first of its kind in the Arab states, the speaker of the Jordanian parliament Abdul Hadi al-Majali has submitted to the legal committee at the parliament a proposal on a law banning double- nationality of officials at the state's various departments. The proposal was submitted by 20 parliament members.
It states to quit any official at the three Legislative, executive and judicial authority or in public companies and people's commissions if he carries another nationality, besides the Jordanian nationalist. But the proposal did not specify what kind of national it should be, whether being an Arab one or foreign.
The proposal also bans any official from opening financial accounts, making investments or buying properties outside the country.
However, the Jordanian government does not permit its citizens from obtaining the nationality of another state or to giving up the Jordanian nationality, unless approved by the Cabinet.
