Mauritania's opposition conditions for maintaining a real detente

Originally published

The Mauritanian opposition parties have replied to the proposal made by the Mauritania's President Mu'weya Wild Taye to introduce reforms on the elections law, by putting three conditions in order to achieve a genuine political detente.

Following its meetings, the front has laid three points which it considered the basic conditions to attain the political détente. They are: abrogating the measure which states to dissolve the main opposition gathering of the democratic forces federation, the Baathist national vanguard party, to set up an independent committee to supervise the elections, opening a transparent and deep dialogue between the authority and the opposition concerning the list of required changes debated since 1997.

In a statement, the front said that this is the real way to eliminate the political crisis.

Among other things, the Mauritanian opposition calls for the independence of the judicial system and the neutrality of the administration, forming an independent committee for the elections and opening the official mass media before the opposition and providing financial backing to it.
