Originally published

Spatial tele-detection offers, at the dawn of a new millenium, new prospects and opportunities to guarantee sustained development, said participants to the Third "Marisy" (Middle-East and African Remote Sensing International Symposium) held Oct 26-27 in Rabat.

The event staged by the Moroccan royal tele-detection center "CRTS" on "The new era in earth-watching and geo-information" gathered experts and head of space agencies who expounded respective strategies and findings in observing our planet and discussed challenges for developing countries if they are to use these advanced technologies.

Recommendations by the United Nations conference of the peaceful use of space of July 1999 in Vienna should be implemented and very high geo-information resolution promoted, participants agreed. Training and refreshing courses for engineers and technicians in the field of earth-watching were also underlined.

The event held under royal patronage and attended by experts from 50 countries of Europe, North-America, the Middle-East and Africa highlighted ways sectors such as agriculture, water and forest, urbanism and remote medical care could benefit from remote sensing.
