Agadir maritime chamber says no to fishing agreement with EU

Originally published

The Agadir-central Atlantic sea-fishery chamber renewed opposition to any new fishing agreement with the European Union saying resources were endangered.

Following the visit to Rabat of European agriculture and fishery commissioner Franz Fischler, said a chamber release, the government informed neither the Moroccan fishing sector nor public opinion on proposals it will be making Monday in Brussels.

The release says the government will bear the entire responsibility on fish-depletion risks and economic and social catastrophe an agreement on fishing would cause.

The fishing sector sees no stock surplus that can be the object of an international fishing agreement saying no fishing concessions could be made to foreign partners when Moroccans have been denied, since 1992, new fishing licenses on grounds that resources would not stand the strain, the Agadir chamber said.
