Arab and American sources and the four-member summit

Originally published

American and Arab diplomatic sources in Washington said that President Bill Clinton's administration is moving diplomatically while its eye is focusing with great concern on the proposed Arab summit.

And this is among the reasons which explain its quick proposal to convene a four-way or five-way summit to be held in the region and attended by the US, Egypt, the Palestinian government and Israel and ( Jordan is also expected ) prior to convening the Arab summit.

The Monte Carlo radio correspondent in Washington said that the Americans fear that the Arab summit especially if confrontations continue, will conclude decisions that might be considered by Washington as " extremist" or would have negative impact on its policies and interests in the region.

The correspondent said that it is expected in light of the new Israeli stand that Washington will intensify its efforts to arrange convening the four-member meeting as soon as possible.

Well-informed sources said that Clinton and his aides had expressed their lack of satisfaction over the warning addressed by Barak and see in these warnings a violation to their diplomatic efforts to halt the confrontation as an introduction to convene a summit meeting.

The correspondent quoted US officials as saying that they were shocked with the speed in which violence and tension had spread inside the Palestinian territories and even Israel in addition to the Lebanese- Israeli borders. The American officials, the correspondent added, were shocked by the deep people's anger in the Arab states. A matter which forces them to close down their diplomatic embassies.
