Morocco renews backing to Middle-East peace process

Originally published

Morocco on Thursday renewed backing to the Middle-East peace process.

"There will be no fair, lasting and comprehensive peace in the (Middle-East) region without the respect of the principles set by the Madrid Conference," Zahid El-Hassan, plenipotentiary minister at the Moroccan delegation at the UN, told a UN Security Council meeting on the violent incidents in the Palestinian territories.

The diplomat called for the implementation of resolutions 242 and 338 to help the Palestinian people recover its inalienable rights, especially its right to establish an independent state with Al-Quds (Jerusalem) as capital.

The diplomat decried the Israeli violent acts and strongly criticized the provocative act of the Israeli opposition figure, Ariel Sharon, whose visit to the Muslim holy shrines hurt and insulted the feelings and beliefs of all Muslims. He noted that Sharon's act blasted all efforts made so far to build peace and reach a lasting solution to the conflict.

"The international community has to understand that if peace, that was once again put into jeopardy, does not see the light and if its not protected by all, the future of the region will be doomed," he cautioned.
