Non-aligned movement calls for immediate lifting of sanctions on Libya
The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) countries on Friday called on the United Nations Security Council to "immediately and irrevocably lift" the sanctions imposed on Libya.
The foreign ministers of Cuba, South Africa, Malaysia, Burkina Faso, Laos and Zimbabwe said in a letter sent to the Council on behalf of NAM countries that Libya has fully cooperated with the court which is currently trying the two Libyans, suspected of involvement in the Lockerbie case.
Sanctions, imposed on Libya in 1992, were suspended in April 1999, Tripoli having handed to international justice, two of its nationals suspected of being behind the bombing in 1988 of a Pan Am airliner over the Scottish village of Lockerbie, killing all 270 passengers.
