After 66 years of border disputes: Saudi Arabia and Yemen sign historic treaty

Originally published

Yemen's President Ali Abdullah Saleh said yesterday evening that a treaty for the final borders demarcation between Saudi Arabia and Yemen was signed.

This came in a press conference held by the Yemeni president in the royal hall in King Abd El-Aziz airport in Jeddah before leaving to Syria to participate in the funeral of the late Syrian president Hafez al-Assad.

The Yemeni president said that the treaty was signed 15 minutes before the start of the press conference.

The treaty was signed by the Yemeni president Ali Abdullah Saleh and by the Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah Bin Abd al-Aziz.

The two states have been trying since 1995 to demarcate the 2500 Km border shared between them.

Saleh said "signing the final borders treaty comes after 66 years of disputes over the border between the two intimate countries and that it is considered a historic event in which a lot of people doubted the political will to end these disputes with this final treaty."
