Plant for tannery-produced chromium recycling dedicated in fez

Originally published

A plant for the recycling of chromium produced by the tanneries of Fez, carried out with the support of the U.S Agency for International Development (USAID), was dedicated on Monday.

The plant, to which the USAID contributed one million dollars, will recycle waste water and chromium produced by 16 tanneries and is part of the "water resources sustainability" project. The recycled chromium will be resold to tanners at a competitive price. The plant is set to alleviate pollution of the Sebou river where an annual 600 tons of chromium is disposed.

Minister of territory development, environment, housing and town planning, Mohamed El Yazghi, who dedicated the plant also signed with the USAID manager, James Bednar, an agreement under which the US agency extends two other projects an assistance worth $ 997,000. The additional funds will go to fighting soil erosion and preserving a dam that supplies drinking water to the northern city of Tetouan. The second project consists of building a waste water-treatment station near the southern Atlantic city of Agadir.
