The Tunisian interior minister Abdu Allah El-Fallal announced yesterday the results of Sunday's 12th municipal elections, the first since Tunis' independence.

The Constitutional Democratic Rally Party -- the ruling party -- won with an absolute majority in these elections yet the opposition with the independents showed a remarkable presence winning 12.5% out of the total municipal seats which are 4144 seats in 257 electoral departments in 37 states upon which 5916 candidates are competing.

The voters numbers reached 2,138,000 in the municipal areas in comparison with the former municipal elections which comprised 1,865,000 voters.
