An assassination attempt against Ali Abdullah Saleh

The Lebanese paper al-Mustaqbil said, according to western diplomatic sources said that the Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh has been exposed to an assassination attempt on the eve of Yemen's celebrations of the 10th unity anniversary, last week. The attempt, was exactly made four days before the military parade which commemorated the anniversary.

In its Monday's issue, according to the sources, the paper added the attempt was made at the premises of the police academy in Sanaa, while the Yemeni President was preparing to convene a plenary meeting with officials and employees at the ministries of the interior and defense and the meeting was canceled after the assassination attempt was disclosed.

The report of the western diplomatic sources said that 6 people from tribes in Maareb province tried to ambush Ali Saleh upon his arrival at the police academy building, using guns with silencers, but they were arrested before being able to carry out this operation. Many of the suspects involved in this operation were arrested.

The sources added that the assassination attempt was followed by an attack against the oil pipeline in Maareb at the hands of the tribes.

No information were reported on news of the oil explosion. These news were conveyed to the Yemeni President during the military parade.
