Information day addresses overuse of Moroccan forests

Originally published

Participants in an information day held in Casablanca Wednesday expressed concern about overuse of Moroccan forests.

Demand for wood energy is twice higher than the available offer and the total deficit is expected to rise to 3.1 million tons for an annual durable offer of 3.25 million and a consumption of 6.35 million tons, said the participants who stressed that forests are threatened by overuse as 30,000 hectares disappear every year in Morocco.

They warned that the use of wood energy in traditional public baths harms the environment and called for the rationalization of the use of wood energy on the basis of plans and research.

Wood energy is the second source of energy in Morocco, according to a study conducted by the information center on durable energy and environment.

As part of Morocco's environment preservation moves, a group of Moroccan associations and experts in environment have recently set up a network for the protection and development of green spaces.
