Sao-Tome Y Principe president hails King Mohammed VI's Cairo moves

Originally published

SaoTome Y Principe President Miguel Trovoada hailed Wednesday Morocco's decision to write-off debts of the least developed African countries, announced early this week in Cairo.

France, Germany and other European countries attending the Cairo Africa-Europe summit followed suit and announced similar moves in favor of some African countries.

"It is a stand of courage and justice," he said, pointing out that these countries have grasped that platonic statements of "support to Africa and development" and "traditional friendship" with African countries would not help resolve the continent's problems and that it was time for "tangible action."

Trovoada said Africa will not be able to pay back in the coming years the mind-boggling $350 billion US of foreign debt and its service when it is common knowledge the debt incurred benefitted more North lending countries.

The head of state also voiced hope that globalization and the proclaimed new relations between Africa and Europe will take into account the existence of developing countries, in Africa and elsewhere, "which also are part of mankind."
