Originally published

The Polisario has never been the Sahrawis' legitimate representative, a Spanish sociologist said.

The Polisario is not the Sahrawis' legitimate representative, it is rather a movement that usurped, with foreign assistance, the quality of representative in the refugees camps in Tindouf (south-western Algeria), Ms. Angela Hernandez Morena, professor at the Spanish university of Murcia, told a round-table in Madrid on the "Sahrawi national identity: myth or reality."

The Polisario is an Algerian-backed movement claiming kingty over Morocco's southern provinces.

Numerous Sahrawis decided to flee the Tindouf camps, after they realized the secessionist illusions of the Polisario, she said.

Waves of Sahrawis, including influential leaders of the separatist gang, left the camps and returned to Morocco. These include Brahim Hakim, former Polisario foreign minister and representative in Algeria.

According to Morena, Several leaders of the movement decided to migrate to Mauritania, Canada and other countries after the latest Polisario congress.
