Aziz welcomes call of US congress members to ease sanctions on Iraq
Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Aziz the welcomed the call addressed by 70 members of the US Congress in which they asked US President Bill Clinton to lift the economic part of the sanctions imposed on Iraq for 10 years.
The congress members who are from the Democratic and Republican parties asked President Clinton last week to lift economic sanctions while keeping the military sanctions imposed on Iraq.
"Millions of children are suffering, and we refuse to close our eyes to the slaughter of the innocents," Congressional Minority Whip David Bonior, D-Mt. said last week, Detroit News reported. He and some 70 Congressman support the measure.
Aziz said, "We appreciate these efforts by the congressmen which confirm that there are in the USA itself those who feel that the siege game does not achieve any positive goal as alleged by the US administration," depicting this initiative as in line with the phenomena Iraq finds in Europe and in the world's countries which assures that the sanctions do not achieve anything, but they turn into a genocide of the Iraqi people.
