European Parliament decries El-Egido racist acts

Originally published

The European Parliament decried the racist acts perpetrated by Spaniards against the Moroccan community settled in the Spanish southern locality of El-Egido.

The parliament rejected in a resolution "all xenophobe and racist attitude" and said it "shares the pain of the families of the victims" and voiced grief over the incidents.

The Moroccans living in El-Egido were prey to racist acts in El-Egido (southeastern Spain) where angry Spaniards wounded several Moroccans and damaged their shops. The incidents, which broke out after a mentally-disturbed Moroccan stabbed a Spanish woman, are seen as a response to Morocco's refusal to renew a fisheries accord with the EU, forcing hundreds of Spanish ships to berth.
