The Arab League has asserted its desire to maintain Sudan's unity and territorial integrity.

The AL assistant secretary general for Arab affairs, Ahmad Bin Hali, said on Tuesday in Cairo after his meeting with Eritrea's ambassador to Egypt, Muhammad Omar Mahmoud, that he had informed Eritrea of the desire shown by the AL to preserve Sudan's territorial integrity and the importance of continuous efforts to achieve national reconciliation and peace in Sudan.

Bin Hali continued in press statements he made following the meeting that the AL considers the IGAD initiative and the Libyan-Egyptian initiative to be integrated in order to achieve reconciliation in Sudan.

He added that the question of Sudan and its latest developments will be debated during the next meeting of the Arab foreign ministers council on March 12 with the objective of uniting Arab stances towards the Sudanese question and to assert the Arab stand in backing Sudan against foreign conspiratorial schemes against Sudan.

Bin Hali continued that Eritrea's ambassador told the AL about the steps taken to develop Eritrean - Sudanese relations, especially after restoring normal relations between the two countries.

Bin Hali said the Eritrean ambassador briefed the AL on the latest developments concerning the Ethiopia - Eritrea dispute and the efforts made by the Organization of African Unity to settle it.
