A church in Qatar for the first time
Qatar, Religion, 12/31/1999
The Qatari Gulf Times newspaper quoted the Italian ambassador in Doha on Thursday as saying that the Qatari authorities have permitted the building of the first church in the country.
The ambassador added "The establishment of a Catholic church in Qatar has been approved in principle," and only some technical and financial details are only left for starting the building operation of the church.
He indicated that the Qatari Foreign Ministry informed Papal Nuncio Monsignor Grimolli of its consent for building the church. The ambassador added, "Four years ago, when I first arrived in Doha, the idea of building a Catholic church was unthinkable. Today, under HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, Qatar has undergone a transformation."
Some 60,000 Catholics and 10,00 orthodox live in Qatar. Qatar's population is 80% foreigners.
