Libya denounces normalization between Mauritania and Israel
Libya-Regional, Politics, 10/30/1999

Libya denounced yesterday the establishment of diplomatic relations between Mauritania and Israel on the ambassadors' level, saying that this is a blow directed to the Maghreb and the Arab states as a whole.

Libyan diplomatic sources said that Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi of Libya made consultations with Morocco's King Mohammed VI, Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika and Tunisian President Zein El-Abidin Bin Ali through phone calls yesterday around the Mauritanian government's decision to establish diplomatic relations with Israel."

Moreover in Nouakchott, the mosques' Imams in the Mauritanian capital opposed yesterday the diplomatic agreement with Israel, depicting it as a crime refused by Islamic legislation. Some of them denounced in a Friday sermon the step that was taken by both the Mauritanian government and Israel to urge the boycott of the Israelis.
