Jordanian Journalists Union expels three journalists
Jordan, Politics, 10/20/1999
The Jordanian Journalists Union's council in a session held on Tuesday decided to drop the membership of three of the union's members -- Sultan Khattab, Abdullah Hasanat and Jihad al-Moumeni -- and definitely prevent them from practising "journalism," over violations of the repeated decisions taken by the Jordanian JU and the Arab Journalists Union which ban visiting Israel and call for abiding by the decision to resist normalization of relations with Israel.
The said three Jordanian journalists together with a member of the Writers Union, Issa al-Shueibi, visited Israel at the invitation of Haifa University and met with several Israeli officials, including Israeli Foreign Minister David Levy. The four men visited several Israeli establishments during their visit.
Khattab was the chief editor of the Jordanian al-Shaab paper whose name is changed to al-Aswaq daily, and he is now a columnist in the Jordanian daily al-Rai. Hasanat is the chief editor of the Jordanian English daily Jordan Times, while al-Moumeni is a columnist for the Jordanian daily al-Dostour
In a statement the chief of the Jordanian Journalists Union Fakhri Abu Hamdah said that this decision is in line of the decisions of the Jordanian JU's general commission and successive councils and the decisions of the Arab Journalists Union."
He added that the JU council carried out this decision because, "Visiting Israel violates the norms of the craft of journalism and that making relations with Israel can be only made after Israel's abidance to international legitimacy resolutions, its honouring of signed agreements, restoring back all occupied Arab lands to its legitimate owners, withdrawal until June 4, 1967 border lines and establishing a just and comprehensive peace in the region."
