On relations between Morocco and Israel
Morocco-Israel, Politics, 7/28/1999

The British daily the Independent said on Tuesday that the death of King Hassan II of Morocco on Friday gave rise to revelation of several secrets on intelligence relations between Morocco and Israel.

In a report for its correspondent in Jerusalem, Eric Silver, the paper added there were secret relations between the Moroccan intelligence and its Israeli counterpart though the past 40 years, adding that these relations had exceeded mere exchanges of intelligence information about Israeli enemies in the Middle East.

The paper proceeded that Israel had trained Moroccan agents and provided the Moroccan king with tanks and played a key role in assassinating one of the key Moroccan opposition leaders.

The paper said that secret contacts started between Israel and Morocco in 1961 under the reign of the father of King Hassan II, Muhammad V, who permitted tens of thousands of Moroccan Jews to emigrate to Israel, and then King Hassan expanded the scale of secret contacts.

The paper added that the Israeli foreign intelligence, the Mossad, trained Moroccan intelligence agents and gave information about Moroccan separatists. The paper said the information provided by the Moroccan intelligence had enabled the Mossad to make a break into deliberations of an Arab summit held to discuss a united Arab leadership, noting that this spying act was very important to the Israeli intelligence and resulted in the June 6 setback in 1967.

The British paper continued that King Hassan II also hosted secret talks between the envoy of the late Egyptian President Anwar al-Sadat and an Israeli foreign minister, a matter which paved the way for the visit of al-Sadat to Jerusalem and signing an Israeli-Egyptian peace agreement in 1979.
