Ethiopian Falasha Jews in Israel
Israel-Ethiopia, Local, 6/23/1999
The operation to transport Ethiopian Falasha Jews who live in Ethiopia's al-Kawara district started on Tuesday.
The BBC quoted its correspondent in occupied Jerusalem as saying that the first batch of those Jews numbers 88 Jews, adding that the others will be transported into Israel in the coming months within groups.
The correspondent added that the Israeli authorities are determined to carry out an air transportation campaign for those Jews who were late to be brought to Israeli during the two first transportation operations under the pretext of the famine.
The number of Jews then was 70,000 and they were not permitted to come together, out of fears that the Ethiopian government does not want to be looked upon as a country from where its people escape.
