Mubarak, Arafat to meet shortly in Cairo as Israel freeze Wye accord
Egypt, Politics, 1/21/1999
Palestinian President Yasser Arafat will arrive in Cairo within the coming days to hold talks with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on the current status of the Palestinian peace track in light of the Israeli government freezing of its implementation of the Wye River accord and the European ideas to give the Middle East peace process a push forward.
Arafat's visit to Cairo falls in the course of his tour of several Arab states which will start next week.
Palestinian sources told the London-based al-Hayat daily that Arafat's tour aims at "briefing the Arab leaders on the Israeli intransigent policy and the tricks made by the Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu in order to escape the agreement sponsored by Washington in October."
Concerning rumors of the EU's acceptance of the proposal made by the Israeli Labor Party to postpone the announcement of the Palestinian state on May 4, against Israel's approval of the establishment of a Palestinian state, the sources said that the "Palestinian authority did not receive an official proposal, and we are not ready to offer concessions. The most important for us is Israel's commitment to agreements signed with us. And we are not concerned with the Israeli elections, since we are not part of them."
The Palestinian sources revealed contacts that have been made between the Palestinian government and Washington to set a date for a visit by Arafat to discuss the mechanism of implementing the Wye agreement after the assertion made by the US administration that the Palestinian government has fulfilled its obligations towards the Wye agreement.
During his forthcoming visit to Cairo, Arafat will meet with Arab League Secretary General Esmat Abdul Meguid and Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa in order to acquaint them with contacts recently made by the PA with US and Israeli officials to eliminate the stalemate on the Palestinian track.
