Qatar: US troops protect the Arabs from each other
Qatar-Regional, Politics, 12/31/1998
Qatar's Foreign Minister Sheikh Hamad Bin Jasem al-Thani has said that the US and British troops in the Middle East are protecting the Arabs from each other.
In an interview with the Qatari al-Jazira satellite television station on Monday night Sheikh Hamad added that the Arab Gulf countries invited the US and British fleets to the region to protect them, mainly from other neighboring Arab countries. He added that Qatar was exposed to a coup attempt in 1996 prepared by Arab states, but he did not name these countries.
He asserted that the US does not use force against Iraq without a clear decision from the UN Security Council. But he stated that the Gulf states lie to their people in that they say they do not permit the United States and Britain to use their territories to attack Iraq.
He also added that Qatar hopes an Arab summit would be held, but they have to set for it carefully so it could lead to positive outcomes.
