Report: Israel developing biological weapons targeting Arabs
Regional-Israel, Military, 11/16/1998

Israel has abstained from commenting on reports leaked to Western media that it had developed "ethnic" biological weapons which target Arabs and exclude Jews, a British daily reported.

Apart from the condemnation of Israeli Knesset Member Dedi Zucker, for processing this weapon which he described as "immoral," the Israeli governmental source kept silent toward these information which were attributed to Israeli military sources and Western intelligence.

In its Sunday issue, the British daily "Sunday Times" said that Israel is embarking on developing biological weapons which can affect people according to their ethnic affiliation.

The paper reported that Israeli scientists are trying to exploit medical discoveries in order to diagnose "distinctive genes" relating to Arabs and develop according to these genes "microorganisms" that can attack those who carry these "distinctive genes" apart from others through transforming the "DNA system" inside the human cells.

The same source quoted scientists working at the Israeli Neis Tasyouna institute which specializes in manufacturing biological and chemical weapons as saying that they faced difficulties in diagnosing "distinctive genes for the Arabs" because both Jews and Arabs are descended from a Semitic origin, while others said they could actually diagnose certain traits "in the profile gene" of certain Arab communities, especially the Iraqi people.

The said weapon can be used by being sprayed in the air or the water. Israeli sources said that this "weapon can get at the trench of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein."

The name of the Israeli biological institute was front-paged by the Israeli dailies following news that Israelis who live near the institute had been exposed to vague and unfamiliar symptoms as a result of material leakage. Israeli officials denied such news.

The Israeli media gave wide interest to the report by the British daily, which asserted that a secret report on the development of the Israeli ethnic weapons project had recently arrived at the US Defense Department (Pentagon ).

Last year the Pentagon warned in a secret report against the possibility of developing biological elements through genetic engineering to manufacture new weapons of mass destruction.

The idea of the ethnic biological weapon was based on research prepared by a scientist from South Africa during apartheid in South Africa. The idea was disclosed during discussions of the investigation into crimes of racial discrimination in South Africa. All research pertaining to the development of biological weapons was secretly transferred to Israel from South Africa just a short time prior to the collapse of the racist regime in South Africa out of fears that it would fall into the hands of the blacks.

Within the same context, Israeli Foreign Minister Ariel Sharon reiterated that, "Israel reserves its right to repel any possible Iraqi attack."

At the conclusion of his meeting on Sunday with the US secretary of commerce, Sharon added: "Israel can defend itself and knows how to prevent being attacked."
